Meet Mocha meet mocha This is his story

Does it feel like everybody is trying to hold you down people weighing you down; or that people are trying to trap you in a cage  cage?  Do you ever feel like you are outside looking in outside; that people don't see you hidden or that you don't want to be seen? Do you find yourself constantly looking over your shoulders looking over sholders?  Do you wish you could undo past mistakes pillow mess up and not be made to feel ashamed cone of shame? Do people think you play games  playing games  or hang out all the time or lay around the house too much   hanging out ? Has life caused you to wonder about a lot of things wondering or even caused you to turn your back on family and friends turn your back?   Have you been to the point of  just wanting to quit and give up given up ? Do you ever just want someone to pay attention to you, to listen to you or just sit with you curious

Mocha gets like that sometimes, and then he seeks out his human caretaker.

Meet Mrs. Hunter, this is her story

Hello,  I am Karen (Stevens) Hunter, the school counselor at New Bridge Academy. I have been working with youths for over 30 years beginning my career with the SC Department of Juvenile Justice as a probation officer and later as a parole examiner.  In my work with the juvenile system, I saw a need to work with youths prior to involvement with the court system.  I received my undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina (USC),  and for this reason, I returned to USC to obtain a formal degree in counseling to which I earned a Specialist Degree in Counselor Education.  I began work as a school counselor in 2004 in Lexington School District Two at Brookland-Cayce (BC) High School.  I was at BC for 11 years, having served as Department Head for 7 years.

In 2015,  I became the first full-time counselor of the Lexington District Two Alternative Program.  I work with students in all of the grades and programs -  K-12, TARGET (physically and intellectually challenged students); COAP (Category One Alternative Program), and the EEP (Expulsion Extension Program).  Having the chance to interact with students at all levels allows me the opportunity to recognize how I can be an asset to meet the interests of the students and families needing service.

Students who are serviced by New Bridge Academy have a chance to meet with me regularly if need be, and I have a chance to interact and work with them more on social and emotional learning.  Through our mentoring program and community partnerships, students are learning and discovering skills that will benefit them after leaving NBA.
